Agri SA calls for govt assistance for farmers affected by the drought

Agri SA has called for relief for farmers who have been hardest-hit and devastated by the ongoing drought.

Despite plenty of rain over recent weeks in various parts of the country, South Africa's farmers are still experiencing the worst drought in a decade.

702's Bruce Whitfield spoke to executive director at Agri SA, Omri van Zyl, regarding the crisis in the country's agriculture and food security sector.

We haven't had widespread rain in South Africa so far, specifically in the Northern Cape, North West and parts of the Free State.

Omri van Zyl, Agri SA

Food price inflation has been attributed to the challenging conditions that the country's farmers are having to survive as a result of the drought.

This exacerbates the previous drought that we've had over the passed two years in terms of reproduction for this country.

Omri van Zyl, Agri SA

The agricultural group said that government remains challenged in mobilising action to assist farmers in need.

The perception is that there's rain in Joburg so the drought is broken; that's not the case.
