Surfer describes frightening encounter with great white shark

Advocate Ben Swart has lived to tell the tale of how he was knocked off his surf ski by a four-metre long great white shark over the weekend.

Speaking to 702's Bruce Whitfield, he said he was petrified once he realised that he was struck from the bottom of his surf ski while paddling off the coast of Plettenberg Bay.

He said that his case was probably one of mistaken identity for the shark, which caused it to retreat as there was no blood to excite it.

All hell broke loose when a shark attacked me from the bottom and struck the surf ski half a meter behind my seat.

It hung around for about half a minute and then disappeared.
