Maguvhe's refusal to resign was just delaying tactic - Maxegwana

Chairperson of the Board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe tendered in his resignation on Monday to President Jacob Zuma.

The Presidency later released a statement saying they had received and accepted his resignation.

Maguvhe was the only remaining non-executive board member of the embattled SABC.

Humphrey Maxegwana, Chairperson of Parliamentary portfolio committee on communications, says Maguvhe took a long time to resign but they are glad he did it.

From Parliament's portfolio committee we welcome the resignation of the last man standing.

Maxegwana says on the October 6 they advised Maguvhe as well as other members to resign but they refused. Maghuve's refusal was just delaying tactics says Maxegwana.

He says now Parliament is looking forward to establishing and appointing the interim board as soon as it re-opens in 2017.

I am sure by now different parties are working on who should be part of that interim board.

William Bird, Executive Director Media Monitoring says they are looking forward to seeing recommendations made by the Parliamentary portfolio committee being implemented.

Unless we make structural changes to the SABC, some specific changes about the powers and role of the Minister and Parliament... It is really essential that we look beyond holding those that are accountable, charging them and getting back the money to actually seeing to it that these kinds of things don't happen again.
