SA's road deaths escalate by 17%

Spokesperson to Transport Minister Dipou Peters, Ishmael Mnisi, says they are concerned that the number of fatalities on our roads has sky rocketed compared to the same time last year.

Minister Peters announced on Tuesday that 845 road fatalities have been recorded since 1 December this year, that is a 17 percent increase.

Negligence and drunken driving have again been identified as the leading cause of deaths on the country's roads.

We call on to the nation to be more circumspect in relation to how we use our roads...

Ishmael Mnisi, Spokesperson to Transport Minister Dipou Peters

Mnisi says their campaign this year has its focus on visibility on the roads. He says they are working closely with the SAPS, defence force as well as cross border police.

He says it is worrying that pedestrians have also contributed about 33.4% to road deaths.

Individuals who use our roads, they too, have a role to play.

The department is doing everything in its power to lower these numbers, says Mnisi.
