Taxpayers warned of scammers using Sars logo

The South African Revenue Service issued a statement warning South Africans about various scam tactics where the Sars logo is being used to scam taxpayers.

SARS Senior Media Specialist, Janine Mqulwana, says Sars is legislated to use third parties to collect any amount owed to Sars, so it is important that the public verify all companies.

She says they have noticed a scam targeting registered companies, some listed on the JSE, sending Sars appointment notices to deduct money from a companies account and pay to a third party.

We have noticed that the letter head being circulated is fake so it is a scam.

Mqulwana says these scammers are asking companies to pay money immediately, which is something Sars will never do. She says Sars will always engage the taxpayer and provide a deadline.

We are warning taxpayers to verify all correspondence they receive with Sars directly via our contact centre or a Sars branch.
