The South African Football Association (Safa) says it would have been happy to keep Shakes Mashaba as Bafana Bafana coach until he finishes his term.
Safa announced that Mashaba has been fired after being found guilty of professional misconduct, gross insubordination and violation of Safa's communications policy.
Safa CEO Dennis Mumble says Mashaba's dismissal was recommended by the disciplinary hearing chaired by an independent lawyer.
This association applies a very progressive disciplinary approach. We don’t just come and hit someone with a stick if they have done something wrong.— Dennis Mumble, Safa CEO
Mumble says he took a long time reading the disciplinary hearing report before making a decision.
I have great respect for this coach, and because of what he has achieved for South African football. And we have to recognise that we can’t erase that history. But this team needs the most positive environment possible going forward to qualify for this 2018 Fifa World Cup.— Dennis Mumble, Safa CEO
