Leaders should take responsibility to combat initiates deaths - Athol Trollip

Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality mayor, Athol Trollip, says custodians must take responsibility and protect the circumcision custom by not allowing under-age boys to undergo initiation.

Trollip also says there has to be a joint effort ensuring that illegal schools are shut down because they continue to be responsible for numbers of initiates deaths.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has announced that 32 initiates have died this season.

The problem we have is where young boys go to be initiated by unqualified surgeons who charge them certain amount of money or a bottle of alcohol.
