Celebrities and criminals (Ananias Mathe) who have passed on in 2016

Nadia Neophytou, entertainment journalist and Eyewitness News US Correspondent described 2016 as an awful year that saw the passing on of the most loved celebrities.

On Monday the world woke up to the sad news of the death of Carrie Fisher, the actress best known as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars. She suffered a heart attack at age 60.

On Christmas day, singer George Michael was found dead in his bed at his second home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire in the UK. Michael is said have suffered heart failure.

On Wednesday, South Africans also learned that the country's most notorious criminal, Ananias Mathe, has died. Tweeps took to Twitter to express their shock.
