Cellphones help inmates in family reunification - Sapohr

The president of the South African Prisons Organisation for Human Rights (Sapohr), Miles Bhudu, justified the use of cellphones by inmates as a means to protect themselves against violent prison wardens. This comes in the wake of the prison violence at the St Albans correctional facility in Port Elizabeth that left three inmates dead on Monday.

Bhudu said prisoners are subjected to gross human rights violations, adding that cellphones are often used as a call for help when inmates are confronted with abuse and violence.

If legalised (cellphones), technology is so advanced and you can RICA (Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information) sim cards of inmates to see if they are conducting criminal activities whilst in prison.
