Female President should be about finding right person for the job - activist

SA Human Rights Commission's Gail Smith says people need to do away with patriarchy and sexism when choosing leadership.

As the African National Congress (ANC) prepares for its elective conference taking place in December, the names of Cabinet members Baleka Mbete, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Bathabile Dlamini have been put forward to succeed President Jacob Zuma.

Karima Brown, standing-in for Eusebius McKaiser, had a conversation with South African Human Rights Commission spokesperson, Gail Smith, and Busara Leadership Partners CEO, Dudu Msomi.

Would a female President make any difference?

We have to get away from this biological determinism argument that suggests that because women are socialised or biologically can give birth, we are naturally more caring, therefore not prone to corruption. Women are as prone to corruption as men are.

The difference in a patriarchal society is that women get judged more harshly for making those sorts of mistakes, and there is a lot of room for men to mingle around.

And I think over time the women who really make a difference and ask important questions have been sidelined.

You have to realise that the ANC and membership are minority of who you actually need to ultimately hold that position.

The person looking into getting that position needs to understand what value system the new South Africa is looking for.
