ANC leadership succession the name of the game for 2017
The State of the Nation Address (Sona) in February and African National Congress (ANC) elective conference in December are two major events that will dominate 2017 politically.
Policy and political analyst, Tinyiko Maluleke, says President Jacob Zuma will do everything in his power to influence who succeeds him as the President of ANC.
Maluleke says the split within the ANC is unlikely to happen.
The problem is that I don't see where a split could come from inside the Alliance at the moment. I see a slow death, and perhaps that position will make more out of the weaknesses of the ANC.

Associate editor at Daily Maverick, Ranjeni Munusamy, says the dominant faction within the ANC that wants to sustain the hold they have on the economy and power, will try to influence who attends major conferences of the ANC this year.
That consultative conference, policy conference, and then the national elective conference - who attends that conference will decide the outcome of that conference. I think that's where the big fight is going to start.
