Wits seeks to axe student registration fees

The University of the Witwatersrand is ready to register 2017 intake of students.

Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Adam Habib says the university has made some progress engaging students to resolve concerns of Fees Must Fall student movement.

However, Habib says he anticipates another difficult year for the university.

He says factions and political interference in student movements have been a challenge to finding a resolution.

It really does depend on whether people are willing to resolve issues. There are people I feel, are playing with the university. There are politicians who want to manipulate the university system to fulfill other agendas.

Prof. Adam Habib, Wits Vice Chancellor

I really urge politicians and others not to play with our institutions.

Prof. Adam Habib, Wits Vice Chancellor

Habib says that the university is in discussion with the Department of Higher Education on arrangements to register students who don't have money to register.

We are engaging government to see if we can get advance fund so that the burden is not on students to pay an upfront fee to cover the first three months.
