Maths and science - why are we in the lowest ranks?

The final National Senior Certificate exam results were announced by Education Minister Angie Motshekga on Wednesday and there continues to be concern about pupils' performance in maths and science.

702's Bruce Whitfield spoke to Dr Roger Layton, CEO of Roger Layton Associates and specialist in school maths education, about why maths and science are critical in advancing skills to boost the country’s economy.

For me less than 100 percent in maths is a disaster. I think it is radical to set a pass mark at a 100 percent.

Imagine an airline pilot doing wrong calculation and you ask him 'how much did you get for maths and he says oh I passed I got 40%'.

Layton says he is currently working on providing additional support to maths teachers to help them provide more personalised teaching.

Edzai Zvobwo, Chief Genius at Maths Genius Leadership Institute (MGLI), started an organisation to help parents and learners manage and succeed in mathematics.

Zvobwo discovered there was an anxiety around mathematics which made parents and their children afraid of doing maths.

He says the foundation of mathematics is shaky in South Africa and kids cannot do anything without using a calculator.

Even the President of the country when he is faced with big numbers he does this dance that shows nervousness...

Edzai Zvobwo, Chief Genius at Maths Genius Leadership Institute (MGLI)

It is not because he doesn't know the numbers but he is afraid of getting it wrong and that is a typical learner we have in South Africa.
