Matric Results 2016

Education activist calls on government to prioritise maths

Education activist, Hendrick Makaneta, says government should pay mathematics teachers higher salaries in order to attract qualified professionals who leave the education sector for better-paying jobs.

Makaneta says maths teachers should be paid five times more than their current salary package on condition that they improve the performance of pupils in 2018.

You can't run away from the fact that mathematics is one of the subjects that are very key.

Hendrick Makaneta, education activist

We need to prioritise maths because we are doing well in other fields.

Hendrick Makaneta, education activist

The proposal is, that let there be a pilot programme for a period of three years and have targets. By so doing, you are also bringing back those who have left the profession and those who are very good in mathematics and want to come back and assist but cannot do so because of low salaries.
