Society needs to decide whether higher education deserves more money- Habib

Wits University Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Habib says a national summit is needed for South Africa to make decisions and commitments to achieve a free quality education.

If for instance we gonna have to find R50 billion for freeing higher education, the question we gonna ask ourselves is why are we putting it in higher education. Why are we not putting it in early childhood development, why are we not funding the national health system. That's a societal choice, it's not a choice by Adam Habib to make.

Prof. Adam Habib, Wits Vice Chancellor

Society as a whole needs to say, we are prepared for these reasons; for the fact that we are going to focus on recreating our economy, we need levels of skills set and hopefully that's where we gonna put out our money. And we are prepared to sacrifice and push out those other demands for five years until we reach that.
