South Africans warned against typhoid fever - NICD

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) issued a health warning against typhoid fever, following an outbreak of the disease in Zimbabwe.

Dr Kerrigan McCarthy, Head of Outbreak Response at National Institute of Communicable Diseases, says their main concern is that people who present with typhoid may transmit it to others.

She urges people who develop symptoms similar to that of typhoid fever to immediately seek medical treatment.

The NICD hopes to raise awareness of the highly contagious disease among travellers and medical professionals.

Our health departments, both national and district. are very well familiar with the processes that are required to deal with this.

Dr Kerrigan McCarthy, Head of Outbreak Response at National Institute of Communicable Diseases

She reiterated that there is no risk of an outbreak at the moment. The NCID is at the moment just creating an awareness on the disease because it is highly contagious.

When diagnosed with typhoid fever, people living in close proximity need to be tested too to ensure the disease has not spread.
