Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced the matric pass rate for 2016 as 72.5%, up from 70.7% in 2015.
A shocking report in Rapport newspaper has revealed the confidential matric results numbers which they says government is hiding from the public.
Rapport Journalist, Elaine Swanepoel says the DA have provided them with actual figures.
These figures were discussed in a closed meeting between Umalusi and role players around the 30th of December.— Elaine Swanepoel, Rapport Journalist
The DA sent us these marks. We then sent them to Umalusi for comment...— Elaine Swanepoel, Rapport Journalist
Umalusi said because these marks are confidential they are not going to comment.— Elaine Swanepoel, Rapport Journalist
Swanepoel says the marks, which have been kept confidential, show the real picture of how the class of 2016 did. See the actual figures below:
The average mark for Mathematics was 30.8%.
The average mark for Mathematics Literacy was 37%.
The average mark for Accounting was 38%.
The average mark for Geography was 39%.
The average mark for History was 44%.
What they show is that for key subject like mathematics you have an average of 30% which means that a lot of leaners needed to achieve a lot less than 30%.... this is really problematic.— Elaine Swanepoel, Rapport Journalist
