Changes within the ANC will take time to materialise - Analyst

Political analyst, Ralph Mathekga, says the ANC has been pressured to admit that there needs to be a change in the way they do things.

This follows a statement made by President Jacob Zuma during the ANC's 105 celebrations in which he said the party will fix its problems.

Mathekga says this won't be the first time the party is making a declaration that it intends making changes. He asked whether the party is willing to bear the painful cost of the changes.

This has to be a long journey. It is not something (where) we can expect change within a month or even a year.

Ralph Mathekga, Political and Policy Analyst

You really need to overhaul the manner in which the ANC goes about things and the manner in which they relate to South Africa.

Mathekga also spoke about the announcement by the ANC women's League that they are backing Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as the next ANC president. He claims they knew exactly what they were doing.

The ANCWL has done some cost benefit analysis. They are aware that they can get away with this because they consider themselves as the dominant faction within the ANC.

Treasurer General of the ANC, Dr Zweli Mkhize, says the process of electing the ANC leader should be a unifying one. He says they don't want a repeat of what transpired in Polokwane. "We don't want a factional approach when it comes to leadership".

We want the leadership that is based on a consensus, an open frank discussion.

Dr Zweli Mkhizer, Treasure General of the ANC

It is not correct that we should have the kind of tensions around the people who must actually unite the ANC.
