20 thousand job losses predicted for poultry industry

CEO of the Southern African Poultry Association, Kevin Lovel, says job losses in the poultry sector industry are due unfair competition and difficulties competing with European Union (EU).

Lovel says up to 20 thousand workers will lose their jobs before year-end.

South African poultry farmers pay more for maize and soya beans that we use then Brazilian farmers, and to some extent US farmers.

And that's way outside poultry industry control, some of it is part of government's control.

Deputy Director General of Trade and Industry, Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter, says the department has been implementing measures to address the matter for the past three years.

The level of protection depends on the information submitted by the industry during investigation undertaken by International Trade and Administration Commission.

Mlumbi-Peter says the industry needs to provide sufficient information to the department in order to increase tariffs.
