Ministry to conduct motor licencing audit after 5% road death increase

A total of 1,714 people died on South Africa's roads during the festive period. This is according to statistics released by Transport Minister Dipuo Peters.

Peters says the death toll is a 5% increase from the previous period.

EWN reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo says the Minister sent her condolences to families who lost loved ones on South Africa's roads.

Most of the crashes were due to small vehicles overturning or head on collisions. As a result, the Minister has been instructed by the Traffic Management Corporation to conduct an audit on how drivers licenses are issued.

She indicated that many people don't even know the basic rules of the road. She linked this to the corruption within our driver's licensing testing centres.

This compounded by voluntary participation by motorists when they want to get their driver's licenses through unsolicited measures.

Arrive Alive Spokesperson, Johan Jonck described the 5% increase in death toll as heart breaking. He says the feedback from road users shows that we are not a nation of good drivers.

Our driver behaviour as Minister Peters has indicated is simply not what it should be.
