Traffic expert slams 'pathetic' road stats, urges road users to be responsible

Traffic criminologist Dr. Lawrence Barrit says the latest festive season road fatality statistics are pathetic and unacceptable.

Barrit says reckless drivers and pedestrians are the main factors behind many avoidable deaths.

This comes after Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced that a total of 1 714 fatalities were recorded over this festive period.

The minister says the overwhelming majority of fatal crashes were as a result of a single motor vehicle overturning and head on-collisions.

He says motorists should thank traffic enforcement for their commitment to visible policing. as the number may have been even higher without them.

According to Barrit, the fatality figures may still increase and should not be final until after 30 days.

Here is a summary of the road stats over the festive period:

  • 9000 arrests
  • 70% of road fatalities involved male drivers
  • weekend were the most deadly days
  • passenger deaths due to lack of seat-belt adherence
  • Limpopo province recorder the highest fatalities
  • 432 roadblocks were conducted throughout the country
  • 453 263 fines were issued
  • most deadly crashes took place between 8pm and 6am

Barrit offers some advice on how road users can be more responsible.
