40 000 learners still not placed in Gauteng schools

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says his department has only managed to place 18 000 of the 58 000 learners requiring placement in schools by yesterday.

Lesufi added that 234 000 new learners will start their first day at school in 2017.

We managed to slash down almost 18 000 of those that were on the waiting list to come and join the formal processing. We are left with 40 000 and it duplicates to areas that we cannot assist.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

Lesufi says only 13% of learners are joining schools for the first time.

Some schools have taken him to court after attempts for them to take on more learners.

It's sad that when we push schools to put more learners, some of them have taken me to court.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

We won't blame parents who are coming to Gauteng looking for education. We will be the first ones to allocate where we believe we need to allocate.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC
