Transport Minister wants to root out 'bad apples' at vehicle testing centres

Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters released the statistics for road deaths during the 2016/17 festive season.

The numbers are 5% higher than the previous year’s death toll, with more than 1 700 deaths recorded on South African roads.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to Minister Peters about what could be done to ensure the safety of road users.

We have a type of citizenry that is not responsible, who are reckless and who seem to enjoy doing things that could not be done by normal thinking people.

Dipuo Peters, Transport Minister

We cannot have a police officer for every truck and car on our roads... the issue is behavior and attitude of our people.

Dipuo Peters, Transport Minister

The Minister condemned the corrupt behaviour of traffic officers and those working at the vehicle testing centres. She described them as rotten apples.

How do you get a road worthy certificate on a vehicle that is totally not suppose to be on the road... it looks like a chicken run that's been brought on the road.

Dipuo Peters, Transport Minister
