President Barack Obama gives emotional farewell speech

United States (US) President Barack Obama gave his presidential farewell speech in Chicago, as his eight years in the White House comes to an end.

From his 2008 famous three words 'Yes, we can', in his farewell message he says, 'Yes, we did'.

Obama called on Americans to continue participating in democracy and upholding the country's values.

Political analyst and foreign policy expert, Dr David Monyae, looks at Obama's successes.

I think greatest success has been the normalisation of US relations with Cuba as well as nuclear deal with Iran, and climate change.

Dr David Monyae, political analyst and foreign policy expert

First and foremost, he has always been an American president. Even the speech I think he is speaking to Americans, he has done well for his country.

Dr David Monyae, political analyst and foreign policy expert

Dr David Monyae, political analyst and foreign policy expert

There was no need of bombing Libya, destroying a state and leaving disintegration of the state in a way that it has allowed terrorism.
