Gauteng Education officials sent to help parents of 40 000 kids not yet placed

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, says most schools have opened smoothly for the 2017 academic year.

Bodibe says they have deployed officials to help parents of the 40 000 learners still not placed face-to-face.

He says now that they have accurate data on the system showing where demands are, they will reprioritise the building of schools.

At the end of the day what is the issue here is that Gauteng needs to build 200 new schools. And we are building at least 10 per year.

Oupa Bodibe, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson

So you can see that we have a historical backlog, and we also need to build new schools, especially in suburban areas.

Oupa Bodibe, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson

Our focus has been building schools in townships where there were not schools. The schools in suburban areas can't cope with the demand.

Oupa Bodibe, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson
