SA may soon again be net exporter of maize, if rains don't let up

The South African Grain Information Services says that the country could be a net exporter of maize in the next marketing year which starts in May.

Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo says if the current rains continue in the coming months, things may improve within the maize market's value chain.

From May up until April next year, that's when things will start to look better.

Wandile Sihlobo, agricultural economist at Agricultural Business Chamber

Farmers and consumers will stand to benefit from the third quarter of this year, if the country becomes a net exporter of maize

We've received good rainfall throughout the country. The crops are looking fairly well and there's a little optimism for this season.

Wandile Sihlobo, agricultural economist at Agricultural Business Chamber

Sihlobo says some farmers will need at least two seasons to recover from the losses made from the drought.
