Mantashe: ANC should allow debate on why the deputy can’t ascend to presidency

African National Congress (ANC) secretary general, Gwede Mantashe says the party needs to think about succession when electing the deputy president.

Mail & Guardian senior reporter, Pauli Van Wyk, says Mantashe has weighed in on the succession debate, saying there might be something wrong if the 105 year-old party doesn't use its deputy to succeed the President.

Mantashe's announcement comes after he criticised the ANC Women's League endorsement of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as the country's next president.

He said the party should not publicly announce the names until principles on leadership succession are discussed.
