Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane announced that levels of crime decreased over the 2016 festive season compared to previous years.
The lieutenant general says that there have been significant decreases in serious crimes between 1 October to 31st December.
Contact crime was reduced by 5.3%, contact related crime reduced by 5.4%, property related crimes reduced by 2.2%, and other other serious crimes reduced by 5.3%.— Khomotso Phahlane, Acting National Police Commissioner
He says operations should not only be intesnified over the festive season but will be carried out through the year.
According to Phahlane, the strategy of visible policing and thorough investigations has shown positive results throughout the last year.
Phahlane has thanked Saps officials, law enforcement and communities for their support.
He says Saps will continue to intensify policing operations.
