Consumer Commission to make a decision on Ford Kuga

Yet another Ford Kuga burst into flames on Thursday on the N12 in Alberton.

According to reports the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine while on his way to work. He was on his way to a Ford dealership when the smoke intensified.

He pulled over on the side of the road and within minutes the car was on fire. He was unharmed.

Trevor Hattingh, National Consumer Commission spokesman, says they had a meeting with Ford in which the company acknowledged being aware of the situation and said they wanted an opportunity to conclude their investigations.

Hattingh says they have given Ford until the end of February to conclude its investigation. In addition the commission also instructed Ford to put in place mitigating measures.

In terms of the law we can order a recall if there are reasonable grounds if we believe consumers are exposed to potential risk... 45 cars is more than enough.

Trevor Hattingh, National Consumer Commission spokesman

We are meeting next week as a regulatory group and after that meeting we are going to make a decision on a way forward because it seems the mitigation measures they (Ford) have in place are not enough.
