Search for missing SA photojournalist continues in Syria

It's suspected that South African journalist Shiraaz Mohamed has been kidnapped while in Syria, accompanying international aid group Gift of the Givers.

Founder Imtiaz Sooliman says the circumstances and motive behind the alleged kidnapping remain unclear.

We're not sure whether he was kidnapped, abducted, detained or what; we don't know.

The photojournalist joined the NGO to war-torn Syria and was granted access amid a ceasefire two weeks ago.

Mohamed was kidnapped last Tuesday by unidentified armed men while trying to leave Syria through the Turkish border.

According to his drivers, who were later released, the gunmen did not make it clear about who they were representing.

They blind-folded the drivers and took Shiraaz Mohamed about an hour away. They took him out the car and told the drivers they can go.

Sooliman says it's understood the gunmen wanted to "clear up a misunderstanding" before promising to return him after 48 hours.

The gunmen said they "represent all groups", explains the humanitarian.

No ransom or demands have been made after six days and no terror organisation has taken claim either.

Meanwhile, various groups and organisations have embarked on protests and search operations in the hopes of Mohamed's safe release and return.
