SA 'sluggish response' to Iraqi intel on terror bomber - ambassador

South African government has allegedly been dragging its feet on an intelligence deal with Iraqi officials.

This after reports that a bomb maker working for the Islamic State terrorist group was arrested at a Turkish airport in December as he was preparing to fly to Johannesburg.

It's alleged the suspect was planning an attack in South Africa and came to identify potential targets.

It's understood that Iraqi officials have more information on the suspected terrorist, but await the signing of a memorandum of understanding.

Iraqi ambassador Saad Kindeel advises that local government needs to sign the memorandum with Iraq, in which both countries agree to share security information.

"Such sensitive and important can only be shared upon mutual agreement between the two concerned countries", he says.

Kindeel claims that he met once with State Security Minister David Mahlobo, but he has yet to take any action.

Kindeel says South Africa remains very vulnerable to terrorism.

There are strong indications of operative cells in South Africa, ready to act whenever instructed and active recruiting cells.

Mahlobo has meanwhile announced that he is setting up a task team.
