LISTEN: Mbete denies pronouncing her availability for Presidency

African National Congress (ANC) chairwoman and National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete says she is not happy with how journalists report on the ANC succession debate.

Mbete has denied reports suggesting that she has agreed to run for Presidency after being approached by structures of the ANC.

She says the discussion on the leadership succession is currently opened to ANC structures only.

Yesterday the national working committee had a meeting about these articles and pronouncements and we decided that everybody must stop it.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

We cannot have a discussion on air about the process that has not been sanctioned by structures of the ANC.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

The ANC has not opened discussions for people to say things in details about these matters relating to structures of the ANC.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

The answer is always the matter is not yet formally on the table. Let's have this discussion at the point when we have allowed ourselves as individuals.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

I'm saying yes people raised this matter, but it's not yet time for me to discuss it. But, in general I have always obliged the ANC, because I'm a cadre of the ANC.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

Many times there are also distortions of how stories are formulated after we have been engaged by journalists. I'm not happy.

Baleka Mbete, ANC national chairperson

Asked if she was disappointed by ANC Women's League endorsement of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, she said she was surprised.

I was surprised. It was not disappointment. We have got to be very careful with choice of words.
