What Ford Kuga victims need to do in a class-action lawsuit

The family of the man who burnt to death in his Ford Kuga in 2015, Reshall Jimmy, is bringing a class-action lawsuit against Ford SA.

Jimmy's brother and sister held a press briefing after Ford announced it was recalling the Kuga 1.6 litre model as a number of vehicles have caught fire.

Litigation lawyer, Tarran Maseko, says a class-action lawsuit may be a very long process depending on the time it takes to gather all the facts.

But, he says there are requirements that need to be met even before the matter goes court.

They have to bring an application to court for what we call certification.

Tarran Maseko, litigation lawyer

The court has to be satisfied that the litigants have legal representation and that there is commonality on the matter that has be decided on by the court.
