Gambian president tries to cling onto power with extended term

Gambia's parliament has extended President Yahya Jammeh's term, which was due to end on Thursday.

Jammeh (who has ruled Gambia for 22 years) said he would step aside peacefully after losing the election to his opponent Adama Barrow in December.

Despite initially conceding to defeat, a military intervention may be necessary to unseat Jammeh, who has been allowed to serve another 90 days.

Daily Maverick's African Correspondent reports that Jammeh may have reneged on his agreement due to fear of being prosecuted for crimes committed during his rule.

Meanwhile, Allison says many in the region have withdrawn their support for the dictator and condemned his move.

Overwhelmingly, the sentiment is West Africa is saying we believe in constitutionalism, peaceful transfers of power and honouring the will of the people.

Simon Allison, Daily Maverick's African Correspondent
