SA needs more than a Bill to combat cyber crime - expert

The Justice Ministry announced that Cabinet has approved the Cyber crimes and Cyber Security Bill that will be tabled in Parliament.

This is part of government intervention to combat cyber crime following reports that South Africa has the highest number of victims across the world.

Technology consultant and founder of Plain Speak, Alistair Fairweather, says last year the country lost more than R2 billion in various cyber crimes.

Fairweather says ordinary consumers and business owners need to be educated about cyber crime and how it works.

It's important that we have a framework. It's only one part of the problem. In fact, in some it's the least important part.

Alistair Fairweather, technology consultant and founder of Plain Speak

At present SA has no legislation that addresses cyber crime.

Part of the reason it has increased so much in South Africa is because SA is relatively naive about this because we came to the internet a bit late.

Alistair Fairweather, technology consultant and founder of Plain Speak

Also, the tools that are required to do this are become cheaper and cheaper. It's not an industrial skill business.
