High school driving lessons will help improve road safety, says expert

The introduction of diving lessons at High School level will partly help curb the problem of negligent drivers, says road safety expert Dr Lawrence Barrit.

This is after Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced that driving lessons will be incorporated into the schools curriculum through a partnership between the Road Traffic Infringement Agency and the Department of Basic Education.

Barrit advises that education about road safety could help changes attitudes and reduce road fatalities.

He says that road safety education should address these aspects:

  • seat belt safety
  • driver training
  • first aid
  • learner's licence
  • driver's licence
  • drinking and driving

Grade 10, 11 and 12 scholars definitely need driver training.
