Govt on campaign to ensure muti traders and healers abide by environmental laws

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is cracking the whip on muti traders and traditional healers to ensure that they operate within the law.

The DEA is running an awareness drive on biodiversity compliance to help educate traders and healers about environmental laws.

There's a need to make muti traders and traditional healers aware of the applicable environmental legislation.

This after an increase in complaints over threatened species traded at various 'muti markets'.

DEA Compliance Director Sonnyboy Bapela explains that the healers and traders will need permits when using any plant or animal specimen, a live or dead, that is threatened and protected.

If one has to use a tigers skin or leopards skin or any plant species one has to apply to the relevant department for a permit.
