Fake Twitter accounts have a political agenda - Media Monitoring Africa

Talk Radio 702, Sunday Times and Huffington Post became targets of fake Twitter accounts this weekend. A number of false posts emerged with inaccurate and misleading information.

Media Monitoring Africa head of policy, Thandi Smith, says this is very dangerous because some people may be misled.

There is a responsibility to the audience to try and be more vigilant about fake news.

Smith says they are currently monitoring ten fake news sites using names similar to credible news organisations.

She says there are fake news sites with names close to that of Times Live and Eyewitness News.

I think what we have seen with fake Twitter accounts that clearly has a political agenda. It's shifting the political narrative of the South African political landscape.
