The key drivers that prop up inequality in South Africa

The recent inequality report by Oxfam South Africa reveals that the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing, with millions of people struggling to meet their basic needs for food, water and shelter.

Oxfam SA economic justice programme manager, Ayabonga Cawe, says cooperate strategy and public policy are contemporary drivers of increasing inequality in South Africa.

Economist Xhanti Payi and senior economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Studies, Dr Neva Seidman Makgetla, agree with Cawe that inequality is not limited to income only. Rather, it has multi-dimensional factors, such as gender, race, and historical apartheid spatial planning which still affects many who live far from the economic hubs.

Makgetla says the higher levels of unemployment, limited access to education and having people who still stay in former homeland areas, contribute to factors sustaining inequality.

Inequality is important because it has a real different impact from poverty. We have done a lot to raise living standards of the poorest. As long as those people can sit there and watch how rich other people are there is huge stress.

Dr Neva Seidman Makgetla, senior economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Studies
