EWN warns against fake news and Twitter accounts

EWN has warned news consumers to be aware of fake news sites and fake Twitter accounts.

Group Editor-in-chief Katy Katapodis has urged the public to be discerning and identify what is and what is not fake news.

Katapodis has cautioned against the dangers of fake news amid the current climate of misinformation in the country.

This comes after fake news accounts (purporting to be authentic news organisations) disseminated false information over the weekend.

Fake Twitter handles similar to those of Huffington Post SA, the Sunday Times and Talk Radio 702 posted tweets and links to false stories involving the Guptas and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

I see a political misinformation campaign which is dangers in our country. There is nothing funny about this.

Katy Katapodis, Group Editor-in-chief at EWN

According to Katapodis, these accounts have been made to create confusion and cast doubt on facts and truth, even going as far as photoshopping images.

She advises that the fake accounts appear to be targeting prominent journalists who have been vocal on political matters, in particular state capture.

Katapodis unpacks the difference between parody accounts versus fake news accounts pushing a political agenda.
