Make Money Mondays

Mark Heywood (SECTION27, Treatment Action Campaign) opens up about money

I was brought up comfortably; middleclass. I took money for granted until I went to university and started to be concerned with inequality and human rights.

Mark Heywood

I don’t need to own an expensive car. I’m not interested in that stuff.

Mark Heywood

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of the weekly “Make Money Mondays” feature.

This week he interviewed activist Mark Heywood.

Heywood is the Director of SECTION27, a public interest law centre promoting human rights.

He was also one of the founders of the legendary HIV/Aids activist organisation Treatment Action Campaign.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

My dad was a very conservative banker.

Mark Heywood

I’ve never chased money.

Mark Heywood

There’s a need for a change of culture in how we understand money. We need to think less of self-interest and more about social interest.

Mark Heywood

The challenge is not to look at others, but to look at ourselves.

Mark Heywood

We have lawyers who could earn five times what they’re earning at SECTION27.

Mark Heywood

My first paying job was working at the British Post Office.

Mark Heywood

My greatest extravagance was buying myself a mountain bike.
