Black students are not adequately prepared for university life - Edu Professor

Black students in universities are not doing as well as they did in the 1980's was one of the comments made by Statistician-General for Statistics South Africa, Pali Lehohla on Tuesday.

Professor Berte van Wyk, at the University of Stellenbosch Education Faculty, says the statistics have proven that there is no longer a problem with access to higher education for black students.

Those students who are not performing well do not have an understanding of 'theories of knowledge', he says.

Van Wyk says matric is not enough to prepare students for university.

Academic progress requires different sets of conditions, necessary and sufficient conditions.

Research shows that matric results are not a true indicator of university success.

I think a larger number of black students come form school environments which have not adequately prepared them for university life.

Many students are not first language English speaking and the decolonisation discourse is an important step in the right direction.

All universities in third world countries have fallen prey to this idea that we must live up to the same standard as Harvard, Princeton or Oxford University. Decolonisation is a very fresh idea.
