Over R14 million unpaid traffic fines due to licensing centre corruption

City of Johannesburg has suspended 70 employees working at the Metro's licensing centres for alleged corruption.

City of Joburg MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, says officials were using a process called 'fee dumping'.

If you came to me to renew your license, I would register your vehicle into a fictiously created account and dump all outstanding amounts payable onto that person. And then I would immediately transfer the vehicle back to your name. Thus leaving all dues in the other person's name, and you only need to pay me an amount of money.

Sun says the investigation dates back to 2008, but was prioritised when the new administration led by Mayor Herman Mashaba took over.

He says about R14 million worth of traffic fines have not been paid because of this corrupt system.

We have suspended just over 70 staff members within our department. And our own disciplinary process will take place, if they found guilty they will be dismissed.

Michael Sun, City of Joburg MMC for public safety

But this is not let them off the hook with criminal investigation which the Hawks is conducting. So if they are found guilty in the court of Law, they will be punished.
