School's driver training must work jointly with home education - traffic agency

The implementation of driver training at a school level will only be effective if education is also taught at home, according to the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA).

The Transport Department announced that driving lessons will be incorporated into the schools curriculum through a partnership between the RTIA and the Department of Basic Education.

RTIA spokesperson Zukisa Nduneni says the driver training in schools should work hand in hand with awareness raised in the household.

According to Nduneni, the school driver training is one of many collaborative interventions to help improve road safety.

She advises that young people are most affected by road accidents and fatalities, adding that children are vulnerable when travelling with negligent adults and drivers.

Nduneni explains the importance of teaching responsible road usage at a young age, particularly when using scholar transport systems and modes of public transport.
