Denials by ANC members implicated in "war room" saga are unconvincing - analyst

Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says the allegations of the ANC being involved in covert campaign tactics during the local government elections last year may well be true.

He says it is clear from the evidence brought to light that the ANC might have been involved, but the question remains whether the main body of the ANC was in control of what may be a so-called "rogue element".

It is not clear whether the mother body and the leadership knew about this... it might have been that those who wanted to orchestrate this campaign realised that the party is vulnerable going into elections....

Ralph Mathekga, Political and Policy Analyst

Mathekga says the denial of the people implicated in this like Shaka Sisulu is thin and unconvincing.

He says the issue at hand is about the existence of a covert campaign and not about fake news as they mentioned.

Jodene Shaer, social media strategist and owner of The Chat Factory says the paying of people to tweet or retweet is not a new thing and certainly does happen. She says it happens in different forms, sometimes behind closed doors and other times by a public 'ambassador' of the particular campaign.

Shaer says Twitter should be able to regulate these kinds of behaviour.

Twitter hasn't really taken the time to keep an eye on this and to police things... If they want to be a breaking news site we are not going to trust them in future if they constantly have this fake news.
