Apple reinvests in South Africa to boost local iPhone sales

Apple, the largest company in the world, has reinvested in South Africa by quietly opening an office after disinvesting in 1999 when it favoured a distributor model.

According to TechCentral, the company will now focus on Apple’s relationship with local cellphone operators, specifically around sales of the iPhone.

Apple had a direct presence in South Africa from 1992 to 1999.

All other large cellphone makers have offices here. Apple struggled to manage their relationship with local operators from afar.

It’s difficult to know whether this is the first step towards using South Africa as a springboard into the rest of Africa. I would imagine this is the first step in a much more aggressive process.
