We can’t drive rich students overseas! We need their money! - Blade Nzimande

We cannot afford to drive away rich students…Because we need their money to subsidise poor students for that matter.

Fees Must Fall protests has, so far, cost around R1 billion in damages.

So said Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande in a meeting on Thursday about university readiness.

He also blamed “parties like the EFF” for using the Fees Must Fall movement to destabilise the government.

Nzimande added they had their backs against a wall, because even if the government made education completely free, there would still be those who were unsatisfied.

The Minister also raised a concern about wealthy parents enrolling their children at foreign tertiary institutions.

CapeTalk’s John Maytham interviewed EWN’s Barry Bateman who attended Thursday’s proceedings.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

He said TVET colleges mustn’t be the second choice; accepting the ‘flow overs’ from universities.

He’s appealing to students to protest within the confines of the law.
