LifePaint helps make cyclists and pedestrians more visible at night

According to Arrive Alive South Africa, the risk of being killed in traffic per kilometer travelled is over 4 times higher for pedestrians and cyclists than car drivers. This risk of fatality is increased after sundown.

In light of this, Volvo has launched a reflective safety spray called LifePaint which is invisible by daylight but glows brightly at night, in the glare of headlights.

The reflective spray that will help in making pedestrians and cyclists more visible to motorists at night was originally created by Swedish company Track Invent to curb the number of reindeer hit in traffic in Finland. The company developed the product called Albedo100, which was later launched by Volvo as LifePaint.

The original Albedo100 products. Volvo LifePaint uses the first two.

Anders Wellving , general manager of Track Invent, told CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies that there are three different versions of the spray. Invisible bright is non-permanent and can be used on textiles. Light metallic is permanent and can be used on hard surfaces. The water soluble kind can be applied to fur.

It’s a series of three different reflective sprays that you can add to different material. These sprays reflect light and increase the visibility of yourself and other objects.

Practical uses of the reflective spray:

The spray has adhesive particles and can be spayed on materials and other surfaces including:

1. Helmets
2. Any area of bicycles
3. Clothes
4. Running shoes
5. Backpacks
6. Even on pets (using the water soluble version)
