“I will remain Cosatu’s Secretary-General until a replacement is elected democratically,” Zwelinzima Vavi told shop stewards from Cosatu affiliated unions that support him at a meeting in Salt River, Cape Town, on Thursday evening.

“I did nothing wrong,” said Vavi. “Can we rescue Cosatu or should we consider alternatives?”

This was Vavi’s first public appearance since being ousted.

Vavi criticised Cosatu’s current Central Executive Committee for spending millions on investigations and legal fees in their fight against him and Numsa.

This is the first of a series of planned meetings by Vavi and his supporters as they try to reclaim Cosatu.

Vavi says his dismissal and the power struggles at the trade union had nothing to do with workers’ issues, but was about the protection of political privilege.
