Fikeni confident Unisa/Nehawu deadlock will be broken

Advisor to Unisa vice-chancellor, Prof Somadoda Fikeni, has called the impasse with union Nehawu as a balancing act between rising student fees and staff needs that are not unique to Unisa.

Exams will go ahead. There has been disruptions in isolated areas. We will also make sure registration continues and all contingency measures have been made plus registration has been extended 'til the end of the month.

There have been staggered offerings given (in salary negotiations), and and we will engage again with the union to reverse and review the deadlock.

Criticism has been leveled at a multi-million rand software system which could have been better spent on salaries.

Fikeni conceded that promises made as to the efficiency of the software did not materialise.
